On April 11, U.S. European Command (USEUCOM) announced plans to deploy an Army Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system in Romania this summer. The deployment comes in support of NATO Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) while Romania’s land-based Aegis Ashore site undergoes scheduled maintenance and updates. THAAD is a transportable system that intercepts ballistic missiles inside or outside the atmosphere during their final, or terminal, phase of flight. The system was most recently deployed to Israel last month, which also falls under USEUCOM purview.
