US State Department Approves THAAD Sale to Saudi Arabia

On October 6, the U.S. State Department approved a possible $15 billion Foreign Military Sale to Saudi Arabia for Terminal High Altitude Air Defense (THAAD) related equipment and services. The agreement includes 44 THAAD launchers, 360 missile interceptors, and seven AN/TPY-2 radar systems. Other equipment, such as mobile control and communications stations, generators, electrical power units, technical support, and personnel training would be included in the sale. Only a day before the THAAD sale was announced, Saudi-owned al-Arabiya television reported the Kingdom would be purchasing Russia’s S-400 air defense system.
