On April 25, Colonel General Sergei Rudskoi announced that Russia will supply the Syrian government with “new missile defense systems soon.” Previous reports suggest the S-300 is the most likely candidate. Russian officials began considering a more robust air defense transfer to the Assad government following a joint U.S. U.K., and French strike on Syrian chemical weapons assets on April 13. Israeli policymakers have publicly raised concerns over the potential S-300 transfer, which could limit IDF air operations. As Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman told Israeli news website Ynet, “What’s important to us is that the defensive weapons the Russians are giving Syria won’t be used against us…If they’re used against us, we’ll act against them.”
