On August 20, the head of Russia’s Project 22800 Alexander Shlyakhtenko announced that all future Karakurt-class corvettes beginning with the third ship in the series will be equipped with Pantsir-M (NATO SA-22 Greyhound) antiair close-in weapons system. Russian Defense Minister Yuri Borisov stated the inclusion of the weapon will enhance the corvettes’ littoral combat capabilities. Pantsir-M is a variation of the ground-based Pantsir S-1 and is fitted with a sea-launched variant of Russia’s Hermes-K short-range surface to air missile, 30mm six-barrel guns, and its own radar system.
