On July 5, Polish Defense Minister Antoni Macierewicz announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the United States to sell an undisclosed number of Patriot systems to Poland. In March 2017, Warsaw announced its interest in purchasing as many as eight Patriot systems by the end of the year, but stipulated that the systems must be in the most modern configuration, as opposed to the configuration currently available on the international market. Last week, Polish newspapers reported that talks on the sale between the Poland’s Deputy Minister and U.S. officials had stalled over whether the systems would include the Integrated Air and Missile Defense Battle Command System (IBCS), which the U.S. Army is not expected to field itself until 2022. The announcement comes as President Trump begins a short visit in Warsaw before travelling to Germany for the G20 Summit later this week.
