On May 7, the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) announced the start of construction on the future USS Jack H. Lucas (DDG 125). The NAVSEA report explained that the Jack Lucas “will be the first Arleigh Burke class destroyer built in the Flight III configuration with improved capability and capacity to perform Anti-Air Warfare (AAW) and Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) in support of the Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) mission.” The Flight III destroyers will be the first to incorporate the new SPY-6 Air and Missile Defense Radar. The same report also noted construction of the last Flight IIA Arleigh Burke, the future USS Harvey C. Barnum Jr. (DDG 124), began at Bath Iron Works on May 17.
