On January 31, Iran displayed its Qased 3 (“Messenger”) air-launched cruise missile at a military exhibition celebrating the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution. While details of the missile’s capabilities have yet to be disclosed, Iranian news agencies have reported that the missile will be deployed on Iran’s aging F-4 jets, supplied by the United States in the 1970’s, and is in the last stages of testing. The Qased 3 was also featured in an Iranian military parade in April 2018, with a sign indicating the missile is “electro-optically guided up to 100 km.” At the time, the missile was unidentified.

On February 2, at the same military exhibition, Iran also displayed its Hoveizeh long-range surface-to-surface cruise missile. At the unveiling ceremony, Iranian Defense Minister Amir Hatami said of the Hoveizeh, “this cruise missile needs a very short preparation time and can fly at a low altitude.” He also noted that the missile is in Iran’s Soumar cruise missile family, added to their arsenal in 2015. The missile can be fired from a mobile launcher and has a reported range of 1,300 km.
