On March 27, the European defense firm MBDA announced it had secured a $568 million capability sustainment program with the United Kingdom government for its Brimstone 2 air-to-surface missile. The deal will have MBDA extend the service life of the country’s Brimstone missiles; enhance the current inventory with new software and other updates; and develop, manufacture, and deliver a new variant of missile, known as Brimstone 2 CSP. According to an MBDA statement, the software enhancements being incorporated into the weapon will produce a common stockpile of missiles for use on fast jets, attack helicopters, and remotely piloted vehicles. This would significantly improve the Brimstone 2’s deployment flexibility, as only Tornado fighters can currently carry the missile.
