On Saturday, August 26, North Korea launched three short-range ballistic missiles (SRBM) from Kittaeryong, in its southeast Kangwon province. Initial reports from South Korea stated that a Multiple Launch Rocket System was used to fire 300-mm rockets. South Korean military officials revised this initial assessment after joint evaluations with the United States and now assesses the projectiles to be SRBMs. A US PACOM assessment initially reported that the first and third missiles failed during the flight. PACOM later amended its assessment, stating that the missiles flew about 250 km. The second missile appeared to explode shortly after launch. The missile test coincides with an annual 10-day U.S.-South Korea joint military exercise.
