Yemen Update: June 27-August 25

Between July 27-August 25, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) reported nine Houthi ballistic missile attacks and at least 13 UAV launches. Of these, an MRBM attack on August 1 against a military base by Aden was the most consequential, killing around 40 people and wounding dozens more.

Below is a summary of these reported events. 

August 25

Houthi militants reportedly fired 10 Badr-1 short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) targeting Jizan airport. KSA said it successfully intercepted six ballistic missiles, and made no mention of the other four.

August 21

Houthi air defenses reportedly intercepted a U.S. MQ-9 “Reaper” drone flying over Yemen’s northern city of Dhamar.

August 17

A Houthi-launched armed-UAV struck a Saudi Aramco oil and gas field in Shaybah in southeast Saudi Arabia, close to the UAE border. The attack resulted in a “limited fire.”

August 8 

KSA air defenses intercepted two Houthi drones. One UAV was fired from Sanaa province and targeted Abha. Another drone was launched from Amran province and targeted Jizan.

August 7

Houthi militants fired a ballistic missile from a local market in al-Hajjah governorate. According to KSA, the missile fell within the same governorate, and likely failed. The intended target is unclear.

August 1

Houthi militants fired an unidentified ballistic missile and armed drone to strike an Arab Coalition airbase near Aden during a military parade. The attack killed around 40 people and wounded dozens more. On the same day, Houthis fighters fired a ballistic missile at Saudi Arabia’s port city of Dammam.

July 23 

KSA air defenses reportedly intercept a Houthi-launched drone targeting Asir.

July 20 

KSA forces reportedly destroyed five Houthi air defense sites and ballistic missile depots around Sanaa. The Coalition also intercepted a Houthi drone launched from Amran governorate and targeting Abha.

July 17 

KSA intercepted a Houthi-launched UAV targeting Jizan in southern Saudi Arabia.

KSA intercepts two UAVs targeting Khamis Mushait in southern Saudi Arabia. Houthi reports claim the attack “accurately targeted” a weapons storage site.

July 8

Saudi Air Defense forces intercepted a Houthi-launched UAV, reportedly targeting the Abha or Jizan airports.

July 5

Arab Coalition air defenses intercepted a Houthi-launched UAV targeting Jizan airport.

Houthi fighters launched a ballistic missile on Wadi district in southeastern Marib, Yemen. The missile reportedly destroyed the governor’s home and damaged nearby residences.

June 29

Houthi militants conducted a UAV attack on Jizan airport. KSA claims to have intercepted the drone, which Houthi sources say was a Qasef-2K. A second drone was launched the same day flying towards Asir province but was intercepted by KSA defenses.
