On May 14, USS MIlius (DDG-69) deployed to the 7th Fleet in Japan, after updates in the last year to the Aegis Baseline 9 system. According to a Navy press release, the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer will provide “enhanced missile defense capabilities as a ballistic missile defense platform.” Although the ship’s deployment comes in the lead-up to the planned U.S.-North Korea Summit in June, the transfer of USS Milius had been planned for a few years. According to the Navy, “Milius follows the guided missile destroyers USS Benfold and USS Barry as the final destroyer to transition from the U.S. 3rd Fleet to the U.S. 7th Fleet. The move is part of the U.S. Navy’s plan to rotate newer and more capable units into positions across the Indo-Pacific region to provide security and stability to the forward-deployed Navy.”
