On January 2, Ukrainian defense officials released pictures of the indigenously produced Grom-2 (“Thunder-2”). The Grom-2 is a surface-to-surface, short-range ballistic missile with a reported range of up to 280 km, a distance that a Ukrainian military website notes “corresponds to the parameters of the Missile Technology Control Regime.” Additional reports indicate that Saudi Arabia financed the development of the Grom-2, and seeks to purchase the missile system upon completion. The tactical missile successfully passed a test of its rocket engine, and reportedly conducted its first test launch in the second half of 2017.
