The deployment of the THAAD missile defense system to South Korea may be delayed due to internal corporate concerns of the Lotte Group, which currently owns the golf course on which the THAAD unit is proposed to be stationed. Strong Chinese opposition to the THAAD deployment may be motivating the Lotte Group to reconsider its decision. In November, Chinese authorities conducted several abrupt audits on Lotte affiliates, suspected to be retribution for the THAAD agreement. The company delayed a board meeting to discuss the topic, citing the need for more time to consider the potential adverse effects the deal could have on their business in respect to Chinese markets. There is no date set for a final decision.
