38 North, a North Korea monitoring group, has released satellite imagery of the Sinpo South Shipyard indicating the country is pursuing “an aggressive schedule to build and deploy its first operational ballistic missile submarine.” Taken on November 5, the images show sections of a submarine’s hull that possibly will be used for North Korea’s SINPO-C ballistic missile submarine. Additionally, a launch canister within a missile test stand at the facility suggests ongoing missile ejection testing of cold-launched ballistic missiles, such as North Korea’s KN-11 submarine launched ballistic missile and KN-15 medium range ballistic missile. 38 North noted that despite this activity, there is no evidence suggesting an upcoming missile test.
