On August 22, CNBC reported that Russia will search in the Barents Sea for one of its nuclear-powered cruise missiles, which was lost during a test in November. The missile, which would theoretically have an unlimited range when functioning properly, failed four tests between November and February. CNBC’s Amanda Macias reports, “The weapon […] has been in development since the early 2000s,” and that “[t]he tests apparently showed that the nuclear-powered heart of the cruise missile failed to initiate and, therefore, the weapon didn’t achieve the indefinite flight Putin had boasted about.” It is unclear whether the lost missile has leaked nuclear material.
