On May 12, The Washington Post reported that it had obtained a Defense Department document outlining the Pentagon’s plan to shift $1.5 billion originally designed for military projects such as the Minuteman III ballistic missile program and the Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) to fund the border wall. Two days earlier, Acting Secretary Patrick Shanahan announced the Pentagon’s intentions to reprogram money designated for military construction projects but did not elaborate how much money would be taken from each program. According to the document, the Defense Department will also shift money originally designated for a space test experiment” involving the military’s Defense Advanced Projects Research Agency (DARPA). Apart from the $1.5 billion, the Pentagon also plans to use $1 billion from Army personnel funds and $3.6 billion from other military construction projects to assist with the wall’s construction.
