Iran Installs Phalanx-like Weapon on Destroyer

On August 18, Iran stated that it had installed a domestically produced defensive weapons system, called “Kamand”, on one of its destroyers for anti-ship missile defense. Resembling the U.S. Phalanx Close-in Weapon System (CIWS), Iranian Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi suggested that Kamand has a range of 2 km and could fire between 4,000-7,000 km, according the Iran’s Tasnim News AgencyKhanzadi also noted that Kamand “is going to be installed on vessels that carry out missions in deep and distant waters.” Khanzadi also said that Kamand testing “has been concluded successfully” and the system “will be mounted on a second ship soon.”
