On April 23, the U.S. Air force successfully tested the Self-Protect High Energy Laser Demonstrator (SHiELD), a laser weapons system designed to shoot down incoming surface-to-air or air-to-air launched missiles. The system is intended to be mounted on aircraft to provide active self-defense. It is scheduled to achieve initial operating capacity by 2030.
