Turkey to Deploy Missile Defense System Against ISIL

Turkey’s Defense Minister Fikri Isik announced that Ankara is developing an indigenous missile defense system to intercept rockets launched by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). ISIL has repeatedly launched Katyusha rockets into Turkish territory during the conflict, last week hitting the town of Kilis. The system in question, reportedly named “Korkut,” would be similar to Israel’s Iron Dome system. It is expected that the system would intercept short-range rockets from approximately 4-70 km. Isik stated that the system has been under development for the last 18 months, and that field tests are set to begin soon, though it will still be months before the system is ready for deployment.
