On August 28, CSIS hosted Dr. Aaron Bateman, Assistant Professor of History and International Affairs at George Washington University, to discuss his recent book, Weapons in Space: Technology, Politics, and the Rise and Fall of the Strategic Defense Initiative (MIT Press, 2024).
On July 30, CSIS and the Association of the U.S. Army (AUSA) hosted our fifth Strategic Landpower Dialogue event on the defense of Guam.
On July 12, the CSIS Missile Defense Project hosted a conversation on Israel’s air and missile defense experiences since the attacks of October 7, including the April 13 attack by Iran. The discussion featured Moshe Patel, director of the Israel Missile Defense Organization (IMDO) and moderated by Dr. Tom Karako.
On July 11, the CSIS Missile Defense Project hosted a conference on Arctic security, the North Warning System, and homeland air and missile defense. Senator Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) presented opening remarks, followed by a discussion moderated by Dr. Tom Karako.
On June 6, the CSIS Missile Defense Project hosted a conversation with Lt. Gen. Heath Collins, Director of the Missile Defense Agency. The discussion explored the Agency's FY2025 programs, priorities, and budgets.
On June 3, Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and the Association of the U.S. Army (AUSA) hosted our fourth Strategic Landpower Dialogue event, featuring General James Rainey, Commanding General, United States Army Futures Command. The discussion explored Army modernization efforts, future investment priorities, and the development of the Army's next warfighting concept.
On May 14, CSIS hosted an event featuring RADM Fred Pyle, Director, Surface Warfare Division, N96, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. The discussion explored recent operations in the Red and Mediterranean Seas and building the future fleet.
On January 24, 2024, CSIS hosted a conversation with Dr. Jack Watling on his recent book, The Arms of the Future: Technology and Close Combat in the Twenty-First Century (2023). The book examines how the emergence of novel weapons systems is shaping the risks and opportunities on the battlefield.
On December 18, the CSIS Missile Defense Project released a new report, Getting on Track: Space and Airborne Sensors for Hypersonic Missile Defense. Drawing upon in-house computer modeling and simulation capabilities, the report analyzes the Pentagon’s current approaches, visualizes key technical tradeoffs, and discusses options for constellations with mixed orbits.
On November 14, the CSIS Missile Defense Project rolled out our report, Countering Small Uncrewed Aerial Systems: Air Defense by and for the Joint Force. The study assesses the small drone threat, the defenses available to defeat them, and plans for C-sUAS doctrine, organization, training, materiel, leadership and education, personnel, and facilities.
